For a complete room sand, yes. The drum sander covers the main floor area but cannot reach within roughly 50 to 75mm of the skirting board. The edging sander fills that gap and sands right up to the wall. Hiring both together in the combined pack is the most practical approach for most domestic and commercial floor sanding jobs.

The Hiretech HT8 and HT7 are suitable for solid hardwood and softwood boards, traditional parquet, block floors, engineered wood flooring, some types of decking, fibreboard, cork, and composition floors. They can remove old finishes including varnish, wax, paint, stain, and polish. They are not suitable for laminate flooring, which cannot be sanded.

No. Sanding sheets and edging discs are consumables and are purchased separately. You will need sheets in at least two or three grits depending on the condition of your floor. For a standard room, budget for at least three sheets per grit on the drum sander and several edging discs. Confirm what consumables Hirelink stocks when you book.

A standard bedroom or living room in reasonable condition can typically be sanded and edged in a full working day, not including drying time between finish coats. A floor in poor condition with heavy paint or varnish build-up will take longer, as will larger rooms or properties with multiple rooms. Most domestic hirers book for a day or a weekend and find that is sufficient.

No prior experience is required. The drum sander is a large, powerful machine that requires confident handling — moving slowly enough for the drum to cut properly, and not stopping in one place or the drum will leave a visible dip. The edging sander is lighter and easier to control. Read the instructions provided with the machine carefully before starting, work with the grain of the wood, and always move the machine before lowering the drum to the floor.

You should always wear a dust mask or respirator, safety goggles, and ear defenders when operating a floor sander. Both the drum sander and edging sander are loud machines and produce wood dust even with the integrated dust collection bags fitted. Protective gloves are recommended when handling sanding sheets.
