A micro digger — like the Kubota K008-3 — typically weighs under one tonne and is built specifically for tight access. Its narrow track width lets it pass through standard doorways and gates. A mini digger, such as the 1.5 tonne Kubota, is larger, more powerful, and has greater reach and bucket capacity. The right choice depends on your site access and the scale of work involved.

The Kubota K008-3 micro digger has a retracted track width of 700mm — narrow enough to pass through a standard doorway. Once inside or in position, the tracks extend hydraulically to a wider operating width for stability. The 1.5 tonne mini excavator is wider and is better suited to open access sites.

Mini diggers are used for digging foundations, trenching for drainage and utilities, driveway excavation, garden landscaping, pond digging, site clearance, and breaking out concrete or paving with a breaker attachment. Both machines in the Hirelink fleet come with a range of bucket sizes for different applications.

There is no legal requirement for a specific licence to operate a mini digger for private use, but prior experience is strongly recommended and some hire providers will ask about your operating history for insurance purposes. On commercial construction sites, relevant plant operation training — such as a CPCS card — may be required by the principal contractor. Both the 0.8 tonne and 1.5 tonne Kubota machines are available with a range of bucket sizes. The right bucket depends on what you’re digging — narrower buckets suit drainage and cable trenching, wider buckets suit general excavation and landscaping.
