A 50mm extraction port sits on the machine body, so you can hook up a vacuum and catch the dust as you cut. That matters on occupied sites, in finished buildings and anywhere silica dust needs keeping down.

Large wheels, a rigid monocoque body and a screw-type raise and lower control make the planer easy to steer and set. At around 50 to 60kg depending on the version, two people can lift it into a van. There are no exposed moving parts, and every machine comes with its operating instructions.

A floor planer isn’t the right tool for every floor. If you want a smooth, flat finish for polished concrete or thin flooring, a floor grinder will do a better job. If you need to take off thick concrete in bulk, you need breaking equipment. We’ll tell you straight which machine suits your floor.

A concrete scabbler, floor planer or scarifier is a walk-behind machine that strips the top layer off a concrete floor using a fast-spinning drum of hardened cutters. The cutters strike the surface as the drum turns, chipping away coatings, laitance and the weak top skin of the concrete, and leaving a rough, textured surface that new screed, resin or adhesive will bond to. The three names are used for the same kind of machine across the UK hire trade.

The SPE BEF 200 Multiplane we hire has a 200mm working width. The cutter head spins at around 1,750rpm on the electric versions and 1,830rpm on petrol, and a screw-type control sets the cutting depth. The machine measures 940mm long, 340mm wide and 905mm high, so it fits through standard doorways and into the back of a van.

Common uses include removing laitance from new concrete before screeding or coating, keying floors before resin, epoxy or self-levelling compound, stripping old paint and floor coatings from garages, workshops and warehouses, removing line markings from car parks and yards, texturing concrete and asphalt for a non-slip finish, grooving ramps and walkways, cleaning concrete and plaster droppings off new floors, and light level reduction where one area stands proud. A floor planer takes the surface down in controlled, shallow passes. It is not a demolition tool. For breaking out thick concrete or removing a whole slab, you need a breaker. For a smooth, flat finish rather than a rough key, a floor grinder is the better choice.

Floor Planer / Scabbler (BEF 200)

A walk-behind machine with a spinning drum of cutters. Strips coatings, laitance and line markings, and leaves a rough, textured key for screed, resin or overlays. Fast on open floors. The right choice when you want the surface taken back and roughened, not polished.

Pneumatic Floor Scabbler

An air-powered machine with several hammering heads that pound the surface. Heavier, noisier and needs a large compressor, but takes concrete down faster and deeper. Mostly used on large civil engineering and industrial jobs.

Floor Grinder

Uses flat diamond discs to grind the surface. Leaves a smooth, flat finish and removes adhesives, thin coatings and high spots. The right choice for polished concrete, thin coatings and floors going under vinyl or tiles. Hirelink also hires floor grinders.

Needle Gun
