The Reason

Why Choose Hirelink for Gas Cage Hire in the Midlands?

Hirelink operates from Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield, Aldridge, and near Birmingham Airport. You get gas cage hire from a local team that can deliver quickly to construction sites, groundwork jobs, and commercial premises across the West Midlands and Staffordshire.

Gas cages are not one-size-fits-all. A site storing a single propane cylinder for a gas heater has different storage needs to a large groundworks compound with multiple 47kg bottles for cutting, heating, and welfare. Hirelink stocks cages in a variety of sizes so you can hire what the job actually requires.

Gas cages for site hire are manufactured from heavy-duty galvanised steel. This protects the cage from corrosion in outdoor conditions and means the cage can be left outside throughout the hire without rusting. The galvanised finish also maintains the structural integrity of the welded construction during extended site use.

Each cage has two padlock points on the door. This is not merely a security feature — it is a practical control measure for managing access to hazardous materials on site. Note that padlocks are not always included in the hire; confirm with the team when booking.

The Armorgard TuffCage style used in the Hirelink hire fleet folds to just 180mm when collapsed, with no detachable parts. This makes it possible to deliver, position, collect, and transport without specialist lifting equipment for smaller cages, and makes efficient use of vehicle space when delivering or returning the cage.

The cages comply with HSE requirements and LPGA (LP Gas Association) Code of Practice for the storage of gas cylinders on site. Using a proper gas cage is not optional on most construction and commercial sites — it is a requirement.

The Return

Gas Cage Hire — What You Get

A gas cage is a lockable galvanised steel mesh enclosure designed to store LPG cylinders, compressed gas bottles, and other hazardous materials safely on a construction or commercial site. The cage keeps cylinders upright, contained, and secured against unauthorised access, theft, accidental knock-over, and interference. The open mesh construction allows gas to dissipate safely in the event of a minor leak, rather than accumulating in an enclosed space where it could reach ignition concentration.

Gas cylinders are used extensively on construction sites for cutting and welding (propane and oxygen or dissolved acetylene), heating site cabins and welfare units (propane or butane), powering gas torches for roofing and road surfacing, and fuelling certain plant. Each application typically involves multiple cylinders — both full and empty — all of which require the same storage standards regardless of their fill level. The HSE is clear that empty cylinders must be treated as full ones for storage purposes, since they retain residual gas and the same ignition and pressure risk applies.

The Armorgard TC1.2, which represents the standard for gas cage hire across the UK hire market, holds up to 9 x 47kg cylinders or approximately 19 standard propane/butane cylinders in its 1,300 x 1,240mm footprint. It erects from its folded position in approximately 60 seconds, with no separate panels to assemble or fixings to manage. The integrated fork skids on the base allow repositioning by forklift or telehandler where needed. Two padlock points on the hinged door give dual-lock security against unauthorised access.

A gas cage satisfies the requirement for a defined, secure storage enclosure and, where positioned correctly to meet the separation distances above, forms a complete and compliant storage solution. The mesh construction ensures the area is ventilated in all conditions, which is a requirement for LPG storage — fully enclosed storage without ventilation is not permitted.

The Process

How to Hire a Gas Cage from Hirelink

Choose Your Size

Consider the number and size of gas cylinders you need to store simultaneously, including any that are empty but still on site. If you are storing both propane or butane cylinders and compressed oxygen, you need separate cages positioned at least 10 metres apart — they cannot be stored together.

Book and Arrange Delivery

Reserve your cage online or by phone and confirm your delivery date and site address. The team can advise on the right size for your requirements.

Position and Use

Place the cage at least 1 metre from any building, site boundary, or fixed ignition source, on a firm, level surface. Erect, lock, and add appropriate warning signage if not already supplied. Check that the siting meets LPGA Code of Practice No. 7 requirements for your site.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Gas Cage Hire

Yes, in practice. The Health and Safety at Work Act, DSEAR, and the LPGA Code of Practice for LPG storage all require that gas cylinders are stored safely, securely, and separately from combustible materials and ignition sources. A gas cage is the standard method for meeting this requirement on a temporary construction site where a permanent gas store is not in place.

No. Compressed oxygen must be stored at least 10 metres from all flammable gases — including propane, butane, and dissolved acetylene. You will need two separate cages positioned at least 10 metres apart if you are storing both oxygen and LPG on site.

Yes. Empty cylinders must be treated as full ones for storage and safety purposes. They retain residual gas and present the same ignition and pressure risks as full cylinders. Store empties in the cage in the same way as full cylinders, and keep them clearly identified as empty where possible.

The Armorgard TC1.2 (the standard size in the hire fleet, approximately 1,300 x 1,240mm footprint) holds up to 9 x 47kg cylinders or approximately 19 standard propane or butane cylinders. Confirm the capacity of the size you hire with Hirelink when booking, as this varies by cage size.

Padlocks are not always included in gas cage hire. Confirm with Hirelink whether a padlock is supplied or needs to be provided by the site. You will need two padlocks for the two locking points on the cage door.
